What
is binge eating? Binge eating is an eating disorder.
Most
definitions of Binge Eating Disorder associate Compulsive overeating
disorder and Bulimia eating disorders. Indeed, these 3 eating
disorder patterns are
closely related.
In short, someone suffering from a Compulsive Overeating Disorder
manifests it through binge eating episodes and/or recurrent snacking.
Bulimia eating disorders are characterized by binge eating episodes
followed by a compensatory behavior destined to cancel the effects of
the binge
eating like weight gain.
Here is a diagram of how these eating disorders are related. They will
help you understand what is binge eating:
What
is binge eating?
A
Binge Eating Disorder is a pattern of eating disorder in
which the sufferer experiences periods of out of control overeating.
The main characteristics of the binge eating pattern
are:
- Eating very fast, a massive amount of food in a
short period of time
- Eating beyond physical hunger
- Eating with guilt
- Eating alone because of the shame associated
with the behavior
- Incapacity to avoid binging once triggered
- Binging can become an automatic response to any
thoughts and feelings which can’t be tolerated (often negative thoughts
and feelings, but also sometimes what most people would consider as
positive emotions)
What
is compulsive overeating?
Compulsive
overeating disorder (“compulsive
eating disorder”, less appropriate
terminology but quite often used) is an eating
disorder. It is characterized like other compulsive disorders by a
repetitive behavior: in this case eating way more than what is
physically needed. Eating is altered from its original goal, which is
to support the body functions, to neutralize thoughts and/or emotions
the sufferers perceive as unbearable.
Sufferers
of a compulsive overeating disorder / compulsive eating disorder
experience one or both of the following behaviors:
- To nibble
throughout the day on various amounts of food -- most likely those that
are processed and calorie dense
- To engage in uncontrolled overeating behaviors,
which bring them into a binge eating pattern.
What
is bulimia?

fully eplore what is binge eating, we need to define what are bulimia

Binge Eating episodes followed by different forms of compensatory
behaviors designed to
counter the effects of the binge eating such as weight gain.
